Adventures in Off-Camera Lighting Part 3 - Window-Lit Portraits
Window lighting has been the envy of many studio photographers since the dawn of artificial lighting. Though it can be incredibly temperamental, if it's good quality, window lighting's fairly soft, natural look is difficult to beat for a side or split-lit portrait.
However, probably the biggest issue is that it's unreliable: excessively bright or cloudy days, lack of sun at all, and need for a window do work to kill the magic for studio purposes.
Despite this, even an amateur can get decent, or even great, portraits using window light:
